Time Flies

Time flies when you’re working hard, participating in physical therapy and launching a new publication! I just realized it’s been about a month since I added to this blog. I guess those alarm clocks have sprouted wings.

Well, work hours are almost back to normal. Physical therapy has got me walking almost normally on flat surfaces (inclines and stairs are still quite the challenge). And that new publication? Let me tell you what fun I’m having.

For about a year now, I’ve been developing in my mind The Genre Traveler, a travel e-zine for science fiction, fantasy and horror fans. I’ve had a page set up for it buried in the Speculative Fiction section of my website, but hadn’t done any promotions for it. A few months ago – around February – someone asked to sign up. They found me on an Internet search!

Well, that kicked me into gear. Since that time, I’ve built an FAQ page, set up a Yahoo! Groups account for it. Laid out an editorial calendar for the next few issues. Set up a support paraphernalia store. Researched several stories for the premiere issue (coming out in October) and even interviewed Kealan Patrick Burke, a horror author, about one of his stories.

I’m building a database of organizations that might have attractions or events I’d like to report on in the e-zine and will be sending a request to be put on their media lists by the end of July.

I’m also building a database of media outlets and fan organizations that might want to spread the word about this new e-zine. I’ve placed an ad in the program for Shore Leave 27 and am looking into other low-cost advertising options.

I’m so excited about this. Right now, the e-zine will be quarterly. But I don’t know how long that will last. I predict it will move to every other month before a year is up. There is so much in this world that can be viewed through genre-coloured glasses.
