Black Halloween

two black catsFor an exercise we did in the first grade, we were given a bunch of magazines and cards and stuff. We were to collect a bunch of images that we liked. Then we were to write a story about them. This was one of my stories.

Once upon a time, long before you were even born, there was a screaming scary night. It was Halloween in the middle of May! The ghosts haunted with chains. Goblins and skeletons and vampires and witches and monsters and black cats spooked, haunted, howled and laughed. Jack-o-lanterns were put out. A little girl called “Quiet” went in the yard to call her white cat in. There, in the yard, stood two giant black cats.

She screamed and ran in the house. She said, “There is two very, very big cats in the yard and they ate Whitey!” Cause there is some white hairs around their mouths!” Well that is one thing that happened that night.

Another thing that happened was:

A new monster was created, it was called the Chimera. It had a tail like a boa constrictor, its body was like I do not care what, and it had three separate heads, on of which was a lion’s, the second a goat’s, and the third an abominably great snake’s. And a hot blast of fire came flaming out of each of its three mouths.

Witches did brews and said magic words like this: Spiders, snake’s knees and witch’s grog, you are a bright green frog!

The End.

While I was attending University of California, Santa Cruz, I took a course called “African Women” in which we studied women’s roles in various African societies. The following short story was one of my assignments. I used things from my experience in Kenya and placed them in South Africa, using information we had learned about…

When I was in the first grade, I had this recurring dream. So, when it came time to do a writing assignment in class, I wrote about it. It’s kind of cute, so I thought I’d share it with you. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Shea, was impressed. [divider] This dream is sort of a…

    Prelude: Clarissa & Zorin Series

Way back when Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were still airing, I came up with an idea that I never pitched. I’m kind of glad I didn’t as the story has really evolved its own mythos and I think will make a nice, mildly humorous series of short stories and novellas. Here’s a short prelude to the first story, which centers around Clarissa first learning about her unique gift and meeting her right hand companion, Zorin — a half-human, half-“demon” were-alien.

  • Adrenaline Junky

I just found this little story idea from a dream I had in February 1998. It’s a ghost story about a spirit who feeds off the fear and adrenaline given off by people who are risk takers. He, in life, was a risk taker and died in his early 30s from one of his risk…
