We Could Be Soulmates

This poem was written Feb. 8, 1991. At the time I had a crush on one of my co-workers, a compact, handsome Indian man named Sanjay. He had the cutest nose! I wrote quite a few poems while I had that crush, and Sanjay will always have a special place in my heart.

Your lips are a rosebud
soft
and yielding
flowing words
like a song
I wish to kiss
them and experience the flow
like being a violin
played by a virtuoso

Felt
without feeling
We could be Soulmates

Your eyes are soft
brown like the
warm loam of Mother Earth
They are inviting
like a bed piled with
pillows and
down comforters
When I look into them
I feel like
I’m falling
     falling
into a pile of feathers

There
without being
We could be Soulmates

Your nose is strong
and hooked like an eagle’s
like the hook in my heart
that won’t let me free
from thoughts of you

Seen
without seeing
We could be Soulmates

Your skin is warm
and brown like
caramel
If we blend
do we create perfection?
If we unite
are we at home
with the Mother and
at peace with the Father?

Known
without learning
We could be Soulmates

Your body is strong
like that of the deer
who prances
over the fence
with the ease of wind
flowing through the branches
of the willow

Done
without doing
We could be Soulmates

In your posession
you hold my heart
Are you aware?

Touched
without touching
Are we Soulmates?
